Mushrooms Can Prevent the Development of Prostate Tumors
Did you know, mushrooms are used in Asia for the treatment have been found 100 percent effective in reducing the development of prostate tumors in mice during the initial trial.
As reported by Science Daily, the discovery was based on research at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Compounds, polysaccharopeptide (PSP), which is distilled from the turkey tail fungus, was found to target the prostate stem cells and reduces tumor formation in mice. The findings were based on an article written by a senior researcher Dr. Patrick Ling in the online journal PLoS ONE, published by the Public Library of Science.
Dr Ling, from the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre, Queensland and the Institute for Health & Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) at QUT, said the result could be an important step towards combating the disease which kills 3,000 men in Australia every year.
Dr Ling said the usual therapy is only effective in attacking specific cancer cells, not the cancer stem cells, which trigger cancer and cause disease progression. During the research trial, conducted in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong and Provital Pty Ltd, transgenic mice that develop prostate tumors were fed subs PSP 20 weeks.
Dr Ling said there were no tumors in rats fed the PSP, while mice not given the PSP to develop prostate tumors. He said research showed that treatment of the PSP can actually inhibit the formation of tumors.
"Our findings support that the PSP can be potentially as an element of prevention against prostate cancer, possibly through the targeting of prostate cancer stem cell population," he said. He said the PSP had previously shown to have properties of anti-cancer and turkey tail mushroom (known as Coriolus versicolor or Yun-zhi) has been widely used in Asia for treatment.
However, Dr Ling said the first time the PSP was shown to have the effect of anti-cancer stem cells. Although the turkey tail mushroom has a valuable health properties, Dr Ling said it's impossible to get the same benefits as shown research of just eating the fungus.

Bubur Bali Berteman Urap Sayuran

Bali memiliki sejumlah menu masakan yang dijamin menggoyang lidah, tetapi bubur bali tidak termasuk dalam jenis makanan yang populer untuk orang dari Pulau Dewata itu.
Salah satu tempat untuk menyantap bubur bali adalah di Warung Tresni di Jalan Drupadi, Denpasar. Warung milik Made Suwarka (35) ini buka dari pukul 08.00 sampai sore. Namun, bila ingin mencicipi buburnya, jangan datang setelah pukul 10.00 pada hari hujan atau datanglah sebelum pukul 12.00 pada hari terang supaya masih kebagian.
Cara memasak bubur yang dijual dengan harga Rp 7.000 sepiring itu sama seperti membuat bubur di mana-mana: beras dimasak dengan banyak air ditambah daun salam untuk membuat wangi bubur.
Keistimewaan bubur bali adalah pada menu penyerta bubur itu, yaitu urap sayuran dan gecok yang terdiri dari suwiran daging ayam dengan kuah betutu yang rasanya pedas menggigit. Suwarka menyediakan buburnya dengan urap sayuran yang ditaburi kacang goreng, usus goreng, serta popcorn. Tidak lupa tentu saja sambal matah khas Bali.
Tentang popcorn, jagung letus buatan Suwarka itu cara pembuatannya sedikit berbeda dibandingkan dengan popcorn yang biasanya dibuat dengan dibubuhi garam atau margarin. Suwarka mengolahnya dengan memberi bawang putih lalu digoreng dengan minyak. ”Kalau ingin hasilnya lebih baik, jagung dijemur terlebih dahulu,” tutur Suwarka.
Gara-gara inovasi Suwarka dengan jagung letus itu, bubur Suwarka menjadi salah satu bubur bali yang populer di Denpasar.
Urap bali
Bubur dari Bali berbeda dengan bubur daerah lain di Indonesia karena teman menyantapnya adalah urap sayuran dan gecok. Sayuran urap terdiri dari daun singkong dan rajangan kasar kacang panjang. Sayuran rebus itu lalu dicampur dengan bumbu-bumbu, kelapa parut dari kelapa yang telah dibakar, bawang goreng, dan cabai yang dirajang kasar.
Teman makan bubur yang lain adalah gecok. Menu ini terdiri dari adukan daging ayam suwir, kaldu ceker ayam, santan matang, serta bumbu kalas. Bumbu kalas terdiri dari, antara lain, kencur, ketumbar, bawang merah, dan bawang putih lalu dicampur dengan parutan kasar kelapa yang dibakar terlebih dulu.
Untuk lebih menarik, cara penyajian bubur pun dibuat sedekat mungkin dengan cara yang aslinya memakai daun pisang. Hanya saja, Suwarka meletakkan daun pisang di atas piring. ”Daun pisang tidak bisa ditinggalkan karena itu menjadi pemanis sajian sekaligus sedap di buburnya sendiri. Kalau saya tak lagi menggunakan, wah langganan bisa protes,” ujar Suwarka.
Bermacam racikan
Seperti lazimnya tawaran makanan di mana-mana, bubur bali pun memiliki racikan berbeda-beda sesuai dengan resep setiap pedagang yang dipengaruhi daerah asalnya. Menurut Suwarka, buburnya memakai racikan Denpasar. Adapun daerah lain bisa saja memakai sayuran yang berbeda atau kuah betutu berbeda pula.
Sebenarnya di pasar-pasar tradisional juga bisa dijumpai bubur bali, hanya saja soal rasa tentu tidak bisa sama. Begitu juga rasa kuah dan jenis sayuran yang disajikan pun berbeda-beda. Dari beberapa orang yang ditemui, mereka menyatakan paling enak adalah bubur Tresni karena ada popcorn-nya.
Menikmati bubur Warung Tresni ini nikmatnya berpasangan dengan kerupuk dan teh manis panas. Teh manis panas di warung ini pun pasti dihiasi dengan irisan jeruk nipis.
Ia sendiri telah berkecimpung lebih dari 10 tahun berawal dari bisnis coba-coba ala kaki lima di pinggiran lapangan Puputan Renon. Belum lama berjualan di lapangan, penikmat bubur buatannya pun semakin bertambah setiap hari. Berbekal porsi sekitar 100 piring bubur seharga Rp 5.000 pun ludes setiap hari.
Karena terkena gusuran petugas ketertiban, Suwarka pun menyewa tempat di Jalan Drupadi. ”Saya pun mulai dari nol lagi. Saya berkeyakinan pembeli setia saya pasti akan mencari. Jadi, yakin saja, kalau enak, pasti dicari terus,” ujar dia mantap.
Selain menawarkan bubur bali, Warung Tresni juga menyediakan nasi campur dan jajan khas Bali. Enak seken ne (enak sekali)!
